内容摘要:The governmental responses to COVID-19 vary across nations, but little is known about the causes of such variation. We explore this question from a cultural perspective. Using global data covering 66 countries/regions, we document that individualism casually decreases the stringency of social distancing policy. We next investigate the heterogeneous effects in the national leaders and institutional background. Countries with older and male leaders have a larger negative impact of individualism on policy stringency. Besides, the governmental size alleviates, while healthcare expenditure aggravates this negative effect. We also explore the effect of individualism on the spread of COVID-19. Our study sheds light on understanding the causes of worldwide policy variation.
